zoysia_grass_seed_planting_-_june_2_2007_5Seeding and establishing a Zoysia lawn grass with seed is a simple but slow process. Zoysia seed should be applied after the last threat of frost in the late spring when soil temperatures have reached a constant 65 to 70 degrees. Night time temperatures can be used to determine soil temperatures. Five consecutive nights with temperatures above 70 degrees will usually determine a 65 to 70 degree soil temperature. Zoysia grass seed may take as long as 21 days to completly germinate, so be patient.

Zoysia Seed Rates: Zoysia Grass Seed should be seeded or planted at 2 lbs. for every 1,000 square feet of lawn or turf. Due to Zoysia grass slow establishment 4 lbs. per 1000 square feet is commonly used in new front lawn areas. For large lawns or small pastures use 50 to 100 lbs. per acre.

Overseeding with Zoysia: Overseeding existing lawns with zoysia grass seed does not have a high sucess rate. Eradication of other perennial grasses is highly recomended prior to seeding Zoysia grass.

Covering after Seeding:
Covering Zoysia seed after
planting is very important. Failure to cover any grass seed can result in uneven establishment, bird consuption and rain or wind seed erosion. Zoysia seeds zoysia_grass_seed_planting_-_august_8_2008should be lightly covered not deeper than 1/4 inch.
